Kitchen Table Makeover

Kitchen Table Makeover

posted in: Home 35

For years I’ve wanted to replace this solid oak wood kitchen table and chairs, that was purchased 20 years ago for our first home. Thru the years it has been moved to 6 different homes.

In the last move 2 chairs broke and I never replace them, instead I would use 2 chairs from the dinning room table. Below is the before picture unfortunately, I forgot to take off the supplies before taking the picture and painting it. LOL

Every time I would go out looking for a new set the table was to big for the space, chairs were uncomfortable or it was too expense.  Plus my son Blake likes this table, he said it’s the only kitchen table he has every had. That’s when I decide to keep the table but wanted to give it a new look. Before we get started with all the details lets take a look at the finish product.

“Kitchen Table & Chairs Makeover”

Kitchen Table Makeover

I set out to find four used chairs with a budget of $100.00. I came across these 5 chairs on a local online garage sale site. I bargained with the gentleman and got all 5 for $65. One had a broken arm, that was fine because the space was to small for arm chairs anyway.

I love French Country décor but have always played it safe and decorated in a Traditional style. Seeing how this was an old table, I decided it was perfect for the Annie Sloan chalk paint technique, I’d been wanting to try.

Kitchen Chair Makeover

One of the best discoveries I’ve ever made is Annie Sloan chalk paint. Chalk paint rarely requires any preparation, such as sanding or priming and can be used on just about any surface. It’s easy, fun and gives me amazing results.

I wanted the table top a dark color, so I stained it with Minwax English Chestnut then applied 2 coats of clear polyurethane. The bottom of the table and chairs were painted with Annie Sloan chalk paint “Old Ochre distressed with sand paper….then applied Annie Sloan clear wax, buffing it till I had a pretty luster finish.

Same Table New Look

Removed all the old padding and fabric from the chairs, then recovered them in this cute stripe fabric that complements the existing curtains perfectly.

This amazing kitchen table & chairs makeover…..only cost $140.00! Love the way it turned out…..think I’ll keep the table another 20 years.

My chairs have definitely seen better days – actually all of my furniture has. For some reason I never considered children when I picked it out it could use a makeover.

I love to craft but I’m always so impressed by people who do furniture makeovers!! This turned out great! I love the fabric you choose for the chairs and your “farmhouse chic” style!

The table looks so nice afterwards! You’re so creative to come up with an idea like this and follow through. I repainted my daughter’s play table once, and it was a big mess. She walked through the paint all over our garage!

      Theresa,
Thanks…that reminds me of the time I was painting the garage walls while my son was playing basketball in the driveway. He missed the basket and the ball knocked over my full can of paint!

I got lucky with the fabric because it matches the curtains perfectly and it was on clearance.

This table looks so good! I think it was the perfect idea to repurpose this one and the deal you got on the chairs was perfect. How did you take the arms off? Just cut and sand?

      Krystel,
The arms had screws I removed then and filled in the holes with wood putty before painting it.

A painted desk makes a beautiful statement piece in an office. I painted my queen Ann desk but haven’t blogged about it yet.

That’s such a great DIY project! I wish I had more time working on projects like that! My dining room chairs can use some DIY help for sure! I was thinking on re-designing my chair into faux fur ones! What do you think about this idea?

    • Bianca Jenson

      Katya,
I think ones home should represent their style. However food stains might not be easy to remove from faux fur.

Love this! Such a great project. I love our table and chairs but yep at 10+ years old they are showing their age (and my husband doing his projects on the table doesn’t help!). I’m gonna try this and see if I can get more life outta them!

I love the white chairs! I would like to find ways to redo/reuse decor around the house instead of buying more but I am not motivated.
